The momentum behind Omni continues at full throttle. Over the past 48 hours, nine substantial commits have landed in the repository, delivering a massive trifecta of headline additions: a completely rewritten clip Drum Machine, Alchemy reborn as a spectral synthesis reactor, and a comprehensive Harmony & Chord Progression Studio built directly into the Piano Roll.
Alongside these creative instruments, the core audio engine has gained parallel insert multithreading, zero-click bypasses, and an uncoloured, transparent master bus. Here are the highlights of Build 21b2380!
🥁 Rebuilt Clip Drum Machine: Real Pad Samplers & Choke Groups
The clip Drum Machine (omni_engine/src/drum_lane/) has been overhauled from the audio engine up to the user interface:
- Native Pad Sampler Engines: Pads are no longer just MIDI triggers for external instruments; each pad can now load its own audio sample and render autonomous one-shot voices with Hermite pitch interpolation.
- Sample-Accurate Choke Groups: Closed hi-hats now cut open hi-hats with sub-sample precision and an automated 4 ms de-clicking fade.
- Three Hit Length Modes:
- ONE SHOT: Plays the entire sample window from start to end marker.
- GATE: The step length or held MIDI key cuts playback with sample accuracy, complete with an adjustable RELEASE envelope to eliminate clicks.
- TO NEXT: The hit sustains continuously until the next note triggers on that same pad.
- Project Asset Bundling: Pad samples are now collected and saved directly into the project archive, ensuring kits reload reliably without missing files.
- Single-Canvas UI: Features per-step parameter lanes (Velocity, Chance, Ratchets, Nudge, Gate, Pitch Lock, Accent), hit activity LEDs, solo/mute toggles, and an integrated sound inspector with waveform zoom and decay controls.
🧪 Alchemy Reborn: The Spectral Synthesis Reactor
Previously based on complex oscillator blends that could cause intermodulation noise, Alchemy has been re-imagined from the ground up as a pure spectral synthesis reactor:
- Elements as Pure Partials: Each chemical element is now synthesized from up to 16 pristine sinusoidal partials (up to 64 per voice, vectorized with SIMD
f32x4math). 12 distinct spectral families (Pure, Warm, Hollow, Crystal, Metallic, Radiant, etc.) ensure phase-clean harmonic richness without aliasing. - Arrhenius Chemical Kinetics: Adjacent elements in a recipe form covalent, polar, and ionic bonds. Kinetic equations dynamically transfer energy between donor and acceptor partials, pulling frequencies into lush unison or creating self-oscillating Belousov–Zhabotinsky rhythms.
- Granular Cloud & Shimmer Plate: Features a granular cloud engine inspired by Mutable Instruments Beads with stereo spread and soft-clipping feedback, coupled with a Griesinger-style plate reverberator with octave shimmer.
- Smooth Recipe Morphing: Changing presets or morphing recipes during playback smoothly crossfades partials without cutting off held chords.
- Solaris Interface: An expansive 9-column panel featuring an interactive Periodic Table element tray, live emission spectroscopy, and real-time molecular reaction visualization.
🎼 Harmony & Progression Studio in Piano Roll
Composing rich progressions and harmonizing lead lines is now deeply integrated into the Piano Roll:
- Dedicated Chord Track: A persistent chord lane sits directly above the piano roll grid, displaying chord symbols, functional Roman numerals, and harmonic functions colour-coded by Tonic (T), Subdominant (S), and Dominant (D).
- Harmonic Theory Engine (
omni_shared::harmony): Built-in knowledge of 36 chord qualities, secondary dominants, tritone substitutions, modal interchange, and Neo-Riemannian voice transformations. - Progression Generator: Generate compelling chord sequences across 18 musical styles with interactive controls for Complexity, Tension curves, Surprise factor, and Borrowed chords.
- 240-Progression Library: Browse categorized classical, jazz, pop, and electronic chord progressions with automatic Key Fit (In Scale, Same Root, or Remap).
- Viterbi Voice Leading: 12 voicing styles (Close, Drop-2, Drop-3, Quartal, Rootless, Guitar fretboard voicings) that automatically minimize voice movements between chords.
- Melody Harmonization: Select a melody and let the engine infer and generate supporting chord progressions underneath.
⚡ Multithreaded Inserts & Audio Engine Hardening
- Parallel Insert FX Processing: Channel insert chains are now scheduled across the real-time thread pool in parallel using Longest Processing Time first (LPT) ordering, significantly reducing single-core bottlenecks in large mixes.
- Lanczos-3 Sinc Resampler: The sampler resampler now utilizes a pre-calculated 1024-phase Lanczos-3 lookup table, replacing per-sample trigonometric calculations and drastically reducing sampler CPU overhead.
- Transparent Master Headroom: Removed the legacy hardcoded soft-clipper on the master output, eliminating harmonic distortion near 0 dBFS for complete mastering transparency.
- Zero-Click Bypass: Toggling insert effect bypass now performs a smooth 10 ms equal-power crossfade instead of hard switching.
- CLAP Note Names: Piano roll rows automatically display drum and articulation names published by CLAP plugins (e.g. "Kick", "Snare", "Rim").
